If you haven't already heard, Miss Mustard Seed's Milk paint announced a new paint color called Aviary on December 25th 2017 and will be released to the general public early 2018. I was fortunate enough to be able to try this color before it comes out and I can't even begin to tell you how amazing this color is in person!
As someone who paints furniture for a living I am always looking for a color that can fit into many households and also have really great coverage. The fewer coats I have to apply, the better :-). I was in shock when I only had to paint 2 coats and then I was finished painting the entire piece! Here is a hutch I painted in Aviary with just a clear coat as a sealer so you can see the color in it's true state.
See what I mean? Don't you just want to eat it up?! It is a beautiful smokey gray/ blue that would fit into almost any decor. Gray is such a versatile color that it has been hailed as the new "neutral" next to white and black.
To tell you the truth I had been hoarding this hutch for quite some time because I wanted to do something special with it. A piece like this does not come around very often so it had to be just the perfect thing!
When I heard MMSMP was releasing a new color, without hesitation I knew this would be beautiful in Aviary. If you are asking yourself "why did she paint it, it looks beautiful the way it is." Well part of it has to do with lighting and I only got it's good side. The other side really had some issues that only a paint brush could fix. With a little sanding I was on my way to being one step closer to getting the baby ready for paint.
So as you can see in this picture above, one coat of Aviary was applied and look at how great it is covering the dark wood!
Now don't adjust your monitors, this is actually what the hutch looked like when two coats of Aviary dried and had chipped in all the right places. All MMSMP colors look different until you put a sealer on them. The color will actually come to life before your eyes once you apply your sealer. I also put some blue painter's tape on the glass because I didn't want the polyurethane to get on the glass. I painted a few of the architectural details on this piece white so they would stand out on their own.
It has chipped perfectly in all the right places, don't you think? When I applied the polyurethane it sealed the paint from chipping further and gave it that weathered look like it was painted years and years ago.
This piece is still currently for sale and is proudly displayed in my store in Nipomo, California. Come in and take a look at it, I am open Tuesday and Saturday 10 am - 4 pm. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of how Aviary can look with different top coats! As always, thank you for reading.
